Spring Fruit Tree Pruning

Spring is the perfect time to give your fruit trees a bit of attention. A careful prune now will set them up for a healthy, productive season.

The goal is simple remove dead and diseased wood and to let in light and air. Start by cutting out any dead, damaged, or crossing branches. Then open up the center so sunlight can reach the fruit and breezes can move through, which helps keep disease down.

Don’t go too heavy—this isn’t the season for a major chop. Think gentle shaping and guiding rather than a full reset. Focus on keeping strong, well-spaced branches and remove the weak, spindly ones.

Depending on the variety of fruit tree, the tree will have fruit on this year's growth or last year's or older growth.

A few thoughtful cuts in spring can mean bigger, sweeter harvests later on, and trees that stay strong for years to come.
